Candle Box Sizes Chart
A 100 g candle in a 65 mm jar needs an internal box of 7.5 × 7.5 × 6.5 cm; a 200 g candle 8.5 × 8.5 × 9.5 cm; a 1 kg candle 12.5 × 12.5 × 14.0 cm. A three-cup 100 g gift set needs 21.0 × 7.5 × 7.0 cm. Every value adds 8 mm to the jar diameter and 10 mm to the height for wall, label, pad and lid clearance.

All figures are internal dimensions in centimetres, measured length × width × depth. Jar diameter is the outside diameter of the glass or tin, including the label. Gift-set rows include dividers and edge clearance.

Three constraints decide the size:
- Diameter clearance: 8 mm. 3 mm per side for glass wall variation and label thickness, plus 1 mm per side for board tolerance.
- Depth clearance: 10 mm. 5 mm base pad plus 5 mm top or lid recess. Add another 3 mm if a ribbon or sleeve sits inside the box.
- Packed weight: 1 kg candle ≈ 1.6 kg. A 1 kg single-cup box needs 1,200 gsm board or above; keep export cartons under 20 kg so glass jars are not stacked more than three high.
How the internal size is calculated
Start from the jar outside diameter and height, then add the clearances once. Do not add a percentage: candle jars are rigid, so the allowance is fixed in millimetres and does not scale with the jar.

For a 75 mm jar at 85 mm high, the arithmetic is 75 + 8 = 83 mm and 85 + 10 = 95 mm, which rounds to 8.5 × 8.5 × 9.5 cm. Round up to the nearest 5 mm; rounding down removes the tolerance you just added.
Glass jars, tins and the allowances that matter
- Glass wall variation. Pressed jars vary 1–2 mm in diameter between batches. A 3 mm per-side allowance absorbs this without a wedge insert.
- Labels sit proud of the glass. A textured or raised label adds 0.5–1.5 mm per side; treat it as part of the diameter.
- Tins are more tolerant. A 100 g tin can run 2 mm smaller on clearance, but the same 10 mm depth allowance still applies because the lid needs a recess.
- Candle weight does not change the footprint. A 150 g and a 200 g candle often share a 70–75 mm jar; size from the vessel, not from the gram weight alone.
For multi-cup sets, the dividers are structural: a 3 mm corrugated divider between jars stops glass-to-glass contact in transit. Two jars touching directly will chip at the base during a drop, even when the box survives.
Drop, transit and carton planning
A retail candle box is not the shipping container. If the box ships direct to a customer, it needs a corrugated mailer with 15 mm clearance per side for single-wall board or 20 mm for double-wall board. The inner box should still be able to move less than 5 mm inside the mailer.
- Drop allowance. Plan for a 6-face drop from 60–90 cm; the pad above the lid is the first part to fail, so keep 5 mm there.
- Volumetric weight. A box 1 cm too deep on a 200 g candle adds roughly 8 percent to the carton volume across a full run.
- Carton count. A 60 × 40 × 40 cm export carton holds about 48 single 200 g boxes in two layers, or 18 three-cup gift sets once dividers are counted.
- Board weight. 500–2000 gsm covers folding and rigid construction; a 1 kg jar needs the upper half of that range for the base panel.
